2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 54

Miles to run as of beginning of Sunday, 12/30: 0

Miles run on 12/30: 2.54

Lazy day for me after finishing 2,012 miles. I ran home from the theater after watching Les Miserables with friends.

This is my last update of the year, as I haven't done my run for today. I'll probably run to the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run.

2012 has been one of my best years so far. I look forward to getting more in depth with that statement in the next couple of days. For now, though, I wish you all a very happy New Year. My sincerest thanks for your support in the Sandy Relief Challenge. I'm certain the funds raised will go to good, productive use through the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

Stay safe!

Miles to run as of beginning of Wednesday, 12/26: 32.61

Miles run on 12/26: 3.18

This was a busy day. We had to take Buster to the shelter before heading back to Dallas from San Antonio and so we didn't get on the road until after 3. We arrived home around 8 and my mom drove me to the rec center to get in a few last minute miles.

2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 49 - Merry Christmas!

Miles to run as of beginning of Christmas Day: 37.61

Miles run on 12/25: 5.0

I hope everyone had a very, merry Christmas. Mine was nice and started off with breakfast and gift exchange with my mom and brother. Full disclosure: Christmas breakfast consisted entirely of cookies. And maybe a piece of pan dulce. I don't really know because I stopped keeping track pretty much before the day started.

I started my run late in the afternoon, after Christmas lunch (mmm...tamales) and took the loop I usually run around my grandparents' neighborhood. After a couple miles, a small to medium sized dog ran up to me. I looked around to see if his owner was anywhere nearby, but didn't see anyone and continued on, thinking he would run off.

He didn't! He kept running with me for another 2.5 miles and I noticed that his foot was cut up and bleeding. Since it was supposed to freeze that night, my grandfather said it was okay for him to stay in the garage until we took him to Animal Care Services the next day. We found out that he had been adopted on the 22nd and, after several escape attempts, the new owners must have simply taken his collar off and let him go, rather than bringing him back to the shelter. The animal shelter said they'd investigate. Hopefully they'll ban them from adopting again, at the very least.

I really hope he's already found a home because he was a sweet boy. If you live in the San Antonio area and are looking for a dog, send me an email so you can go rescue this guy.

His name is Buster

2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 48 - And Good News!

Miles to run as of beginning of Monday, 12/24: 42.11

Miles run on 12/24: 4.5

'Twas the night before Christmas...actually 'twas the night before the night before Christmas when I finally caught up with my Sandy Challenge blog updates. I should have run that morning, and meant to sleep for only a little bit between finishing and getting up early to get my miles in, since we had to drive to San Antonio later in the morning.

But of course "a little bit" turned into too long, so before I knew it we had to be up and preparing for the drive. Fortunately for me, we made the drive in record time, so arrived in San Antonio with just enough time for me to get a short run in before heading to my aunt's house for Christmas Eve festivities. I did the usual loop through my grandparents' neighborhood 5 or 6 times for a total of 4.5 miles. Not quite the daily 5.5, but pretty good, all things considered.

Also, thanks to a retweet by my tri coach Brian and two Christmas Eve donations, my fundraising goal was met! Thanks so much to everyone who donated. The page is open until the end of the month, when my challenge ends, so I'll continue to post updates and provide the link.

2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 39

Miles to run as of beginning of Saturday, 12/15: 109.99

Miles run on 12/15: 2.5

I knew I'd have a problem getting a run in last Saturday because it was the day of my flight from NYC to Dallas. But did I wake up with enough time to run before leaving for the airport? Of course not.

I squeezed a very short run in once I got here. Since it was nighttime, I got to use the headlamp Chris gave me for Christmas. It's approximately 1000 times better than the one I have now, which turns off if I bend my head too far forward.

Miles to run as of beginning of Thursday, 12/13: 121.08

Miles run on 12/13: 1.55

After skipping a day of weights, Chris and I got back to gym hopping and tried out the NYHRC on 23rd street and 6th Avenue. We did the usual routine, which consists of Chris showing me how to do various exercises and doing them himself, and me being an idiot and forgetting everything he says. Also, it was apparently obvious that he's a trainer because one of the staff trainers came around threatening to throw us out if Chris didn't do all the exercises as well, since they have a no-outside-trainers policy. Seemed a little silly, if you ask me.

Anyway, we were set to go have dinner after working out. Once I realized there would not be nearly enough time for a full run, I knew I had to act quickly if I wanted to get even a little streaksaver in before we left. When it was time to stretch, I booked it over to a treadmill and banged out a mile and a half or so. NYHRC must have some thing with Precor, because these treadmills dominated the cardio floor. But somewhere in the back, I did manage to find a Lifetime treadmill that looked like it was a couple of decades old.

2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 33

Miles to run as of beginning of Sunday, 12/9: 146.15

Miles run on 12/9: 2.7

As you may have already read, this was a short loop up to Union Square following karaoke with Jeremy and Monica, during which we butchered a number of Christmas and non-Christmas classics. Holiday karaoke is the best and edges out regular karaoke just a bit due to the fact that it's the time and place to sing Christmas songs at the top of our lungs absolutely shamelessly.

Miles to run as of beginning of Saturday, 12/8: 148.23

Miles run on 12/8: 2.08

My friend Kim and I have a now two-year-old tradition we like to call Girlychristmas, which involves celebrating the Christmas season in all the best ways: watching Christmas movies, baking Christmas cookies, eating the crap out of delicious food, and drinking beer...okay fine only Szymon and I do the beer drinking. This year, I was determined to make it in a good amount of time to watch a few movies. I decided that if I made a big production of running beforehand, it would take me forever to get my act together. Instead, I opted to try hill repeats between cookie batches once I arrived.

It worked out decently. The hill is really good for hill repeats and the loop around was a touch over half a mile long. I did four. Probably should have done more but it was alright.

2012 in 2012: Sandy Relief Challenge - Day 16

This week hasn't been my best posting week, but I intend to get better in the next few days. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and that you all have many things for which to be thankful. I certainly do. Here's a link to my CrowdRise fundraiser:

http://www.crowdrise.com/2012in2012forSandyRelief/

$180 until my fundraising goal is met and 223.26 miles until my 2012 miles in 2012 goal is met. We're getting to the home stretch.

Miles to run as of beginning of Thursday, 11/22: 224.46

Miles run on 11/22: 1.2

I spent the day either with my fam or traveling, and though I'd hoped to get home early enough to do more, I only managed to run with Phoebe for her evening walk around 11:30pm.

Miles to run as of beginning of Friday, 11/23: 223.26

I almost forgot to mention that I did my best to get at least a mile in today because I plan to do the Runner's World holiday Runstreak. This means I intend to run every day between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. This is a good way to keep yourself honest, if you're worried about fitness or weight gain over the holidays.

Yeah, yeah. I'd hoped to get some miles in either before work or during lunch, but since I had to leave early to catch a flight, I couldn't really take a long lunch and I was just too lazy to get up before work.

The Easter Marathon

I finally found it, my spring marathon. I searched high and low for a marathon that would be sufficiently accessible and discovered one in my own backyard! Initially I thought I might make it a trip and visit friends at the same time, but I looked into that and didn't really find anything suitable. I was beginning to think I wouldn't find anything until summertime. Then I came across this. It looks like a very informal thing, but I'm excited about it nonetheless. Plus, even though there's no guarantee that the weather will be good, it's far enough into spring that I imagine it will be gorgeous.

As we get closer and closer to beautiful weather, I'm increasingly disappointed that I won't be able to run the Brooklyn Half. What a great race. I've even considered running the course anyway but I guess we'll see. It's very late and I have a class and the tri tomorrow. Guess I should hit the hay.

Happy New Year!

Yes, folks, it is now 2011. I spent the beginning of New Year's Eve ferrying people from the streets to our apartment. We live within the Times Square security zone and I had no idea how large that is. It extends from 42nd to 59th streets and 6th to 8th avenues. That's 34 blocks of absolute crapshow on New Year's Eve. If you want to enter that large area, you have to provide a piece of ID or mail that proves you live there. Had we known this, we probably would have done some extra party planning. Once our guests were safely in, though, it was an interesting vantage point. The crowd gathered to watch the ball extends up 7th ave from 42nd nearly all the way to 59th. It's insane. And they're all corralled by barricades and swarms of policemen. This is what it looked like from our apartment window.

After some time at the party, Jeremy and I left for the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run. I maintain that it's the city's most underrated NYE celebration. They have a full-blown dance party at the Bandshell, complete with music, DJ, and light show. There's a costume contest at around 11pm. We didn't make the contest, but that was fine because we also didn't have costumes. I'll say about that what I say every time: maybe next year.

The race itself was nice, if a little crowded. The weather was perfectly chilly, no precipitation (frozen or otherwise) in sight. Since it is such a relaxed, fun experience, we had to do a lot of darting and dodging to go anywhere quickly. Unlike nearly all other Road Runners races, this one is not timed. Jeremy, however, thought to time it using an iPhone app called MapMyRun. We apparently ran it in 39:40ish, which isn't too bad considering the crowd. Volunteers were serving sparkling cider (champagne) at the race's water stop and we got to see a bunch of runners in great costumes. These included a puffer fish, Cookie Monster, The Flash, Batgirl, and many others. I think the best costume was a group of about 11 runners, the first pushing a baby stroller and the following 10 strung together like sled dogs. They were wearing a sign that read "The Urban Iditarod." If I had been judging the costume contest, I know which costume I would've picked! Jeremy and I at the start of the race:

We had a fantastic experience and I can't wait to run it again next year! We even had time to get back to the apartment for a rousing game of Kings. I hope everyone else had an equally fun-filled New Year's Eve. Next up for the blog: a guest writer profiles her own New Year's Day race, some workout summaries as well as major evidence that I need new running shoes.

Merry- Just Kidding

I am finally back in NYC. On Sunday I smugly watched the television at my grandparents' house as the blizzard unleashed its wrath upon New York. I thought I had escaped. I was wrong. 1 plane, 4 trains, and an automobile later, I am back.

And after the holidays, I have a lot of work to do. I haven't eaten so many cookies since, well, last Christmas. I'm planning to get up early and go for a swim. Seems like an odd work out for the end of December, doesn't it? As it happens, there's an indoor triathlon taking place on January 9th. While I plan on participating, I'm also painfully aware of the fact that I haven't been swimming in months. Months! It's a good thing the swimming portion only lasts 10 minutes.

You might also be wondering how an indoor triathlon works. Here's the deal: each athlete is allotted a certain amount of time for each segment (swim, bike, run). The race organizers then use a formula to calculate each racer's score. For more info on the scoring system, check this out. Transitions are not counted. This particular race format is 10 minutes of swimming, 30 minutes of biking, and 20 minutes of running. I've never done one of these, but I think it will be educational, if nothing else. The amount of time spent running is pretty short, so I'm hoping the speedwork I've been doing with Jared will have some impact. On the other hand, it might be hard to tell since I haven't done a brick (bike/run) workout in months either.

I'm off. Need to be up early!
